Chippy Vintage Kitchen Table

Last week I showed you a wonderful old kitchen sink I found.
This week I found a chippy painted vintage kitchen table.
It was pretty desirable except one of the leaves was broken off and one of the casters needed replaced.

It didn't really need tons of work.

The patina on it is wonderful.

At one time someone had hammered nails in the top. Now the nail heads are a bit rusty.
Who knew at the time that one day that look would be disirable worth having pleasing?

Once we got it on the operating table Mr. ShabbyMr. Crabby removed the injured leaf and glued it back to "good as new."
Sometimes my hubby is as good as gold about fixing things, other times he is a bear.

This is a close-up of the wonderful chippy paint. I dabbed on a coat of poly, then brushed on one more coat "just for good measure".
I didn't want to lose one chip of chippy paint.

After the glue dried overnight we added two large cleats on the seam for added strength.

You can see the dovetail joint for the leg brace.

This was originally sold by Gould & Son, Peru.
To support the leaf when it's open, there's a little board that swivels.
It tucks away nicely when not in use.
Let's see now. Last week I found a kitchen sink, this week I found a kitchen table...

Vintage Kitchen Sink

I was able to get a good deal on this vintage kitchen sink because it had been neglected and forgotten about.
But I happen to love projects like this and I knew I could rescue it.
It's in pretty good condition considering it is from the 1930's.

This was pretty dirty when I got it. It had sat in dirt, sand, and leaves for years.
But I knew with a little TLC I could make it real pretty.

Mr. Shabby wasn't too happy with this purchase.
It is very heavy and not easy to move around.

It really cleaned up pretty.
First I used scouring powder and scraped off all the old putty with a razor blade. Then I filled the sink with bleach and water and let that sit overnight. The next day I followed up with Bar Keepers Friend.

Mr. Shabby came through for me and built a stand using 2 by 4's.
Then I primed it, filled the screw holes, then sanded it using my little Makita hand sander.

Now that it sits on a stand it is easier to navigate.
We added casters so we can roll it around.

I painted the stand with Valspar acrylic Bird Song Blue. Then I used a dark wax.
I didn't want the stand to look new.

I have it sitting in the hallway for now. I have to find a place where it will fit.

I found the cutest little drain cover.
I think they used these a lot in the "good ole days".

This is going to be nice to display different things.
I might make a fabric skirt for it to give it more of a Shabby Chic look.
I haven't decided that for sure.
Well, I have been working too hard so I think I will go hang out at some parties.

Ovoid Wicker Basket

Yesterday hubby & I left our house at 4:30 a.m. and headed to Webster, Florida. Webster is a dot on the map, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but every Monday they host the biggest and oldest flea market in the state of Florida. It takes us about an hour and a half to get there but it is well worth the trip

I have a thing for old, wicker baskets.
I love the size of this basket. It stands 18" tall, 27" if you count the handle.

I bought the sunflowers last week at the Dollar Tree for a project I am working on.

I bought a few things but this wicker basket was my favorite find.
It has an odd shape. Is it ovoid?

This is the first thing I saw that I wanted but the last thing I bought.
I had to wait for the price to drop.

I've shown it next to a bird bath so you can see how tall it is.
Notice I have no grass. If you want a beautiful lawn in Florida it costs a lot of money. First, you have to lay sod then water a lot. I would rather spend my money on wicker baskets, etc... heehee
I took a lot of pictures at the flea market. I will do another post later plus I will show you my other treasures.

Birdie Watering Can

I have been spinning my wheels all week, not accomplishing much, so today I thought I would just officially give in and goof off by decorating this old watering can. I bought this a while back pretty cheap because the insides were really rusty. (Actually, the worst I have ever seen.)
Sorry I didn't take "before" photos but I think we all know what a watering can looks like. heehee

The first thing I had to do was scrape the rust chunks out of the inside. Then I put some watered down acrylic paint on the inside to "white wash" "blue wash" the insides. This was easy, but messy.
On the inside I used Bird Song Blue satin acrylic (watered down). Then I sprayed the outside with Krylon gloss Blue Ocean Breeze. I didn't like the gloss look so I went over most of the body with the Bird Song Blue that I really love.

With this project in mind, I have been looking on the internet for some really neat bird pictures to download. Lo and behold, I found an awesome booklet I already had in a stack of books right in front of my nose.
I made some copies and ripped out some images.

I decoupaged them on. Real easy.

Then I thought, why not add a bird nest?
It isn't glued on yet so it might not stay.

It is kind of cute though.
The little name plate on the can reads "HAWS".

This is the back. And the same bird's nest that I had on the handle. Remember, it isn't glued down yet.

When I'm sure I'm done I will add one or two coats of poly.

Oops!

I almost forgot!

Before I spray painted I taped off the name on the front of the watering can. I saw the pucker but it just didn't register.
Also, I nixed the bird nest and opted for a strand of spanish moss and a bird.
I think I am done now.

Art Deco Vanity Section Rescued

This is one project I should have walked away from, but the $3.00 price tag suckered me in. And besides, once in awhile I like a REAL challenge.

This is a section of an Art Deco vanity. As you can see it was badly neglected. It is all scratched up and pieces of veneer are missing in several places.

But, with a little glue and some clamps and weights it can look as good as new.
Well, it can look "Shabby Chic". hehe
